Why Have College Completion Rates Declined? An Analysis of Changing Student Preparation and Collegiate Resources.
Rising college enrollment over the last quarter century has not been met with a proportional increase in college completion. Comparing the high school classes of 1972 and 1992, we show declines in college completion rates have been most pronounced for men who first enroll in less selective public universities and community colleges. We decompose the decline into the components due to changes in...
متن کاملWhy have child pedestrian death rates fallen?
Pedestrian injuries are a leading cause of childhood mortality and disability. Over the past two decades in Britain child pedestrian death rates have fallen despite large increases in traffic volume. In this paper Roberts examines the likely reasons for this decline. He argues that neither prevention programmes nor improvements in medical care are a plausible explanation and that the decline is...
متن کاملWhy have mortality rates for severe malnutrition remained so high?
A review of the literature that has appeared over the past five decades indicates that the median case fatality from severe malnutrition has remained unchanged over this period and is typically 20-30%, with the highest levels (50-60%) being among those with oedematous malnutrition. A likely cause of this continuing high mortality is faulty case-management. A survey of treatment centres worldwid...
متن کاملWhy have ovarian cancer mortality rates declined? Part I. Incidence.
The age-adjusted mortality rate from ovarian cancer in the United States has declined over the past several decades. The decline in mortality might be the consequence of a reduced number of cases (incidence) or a reduction in the proportion of patients who die from their cancer (case-fatality). In part I of this three-part series, we examine rates of ovarian cancer incidence and mortality from ...

We believe that group-lending institutions have incentives to include members outside the target-group of poor households. This implies a methodological problem that is rarely taken into account in empirical studies. We apply a general household survey, and find some evidence of non-poor households within the Grameen Bank of Nepal. A self-selection mechanism is proposed, where the interest rate...
